AN OVERLOOKED CAUSE OF POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN GHANA: THE NEED FOR EFFECTIVE PERSONAL STUDY TIME 🤔 As an educator, I am constantly seeking creative and effective ways to help my students excel academically. This drive has led me to explore the factors contributing to poor academic performance. Among the identified factors, I have observed that the most prominent issue within the Ghanaian context is the lack of effective personal study time for students. However, this issue remains under-researched. Much attention has been directed toward challenges such as inadequate professional teachers, insufficient teaching and learning resources, and limited instructional time. Yet, I have noticed that even in the presence of these resources, students' academic performance often remains subpar. This is primarily because they lack the opportunity for effective and productive personal study time to review classroom lessons, engage in further reading, and conduct independent research. I believe it is time for educators, stakeholders, policymakers, and curriculum developers to reevaluate the structure of teacher-student contact hours. By reducing these contact hours and prioritizing intensive personal study time for students, we can empower them to take greater ownership of their learning and improve academic outcomes.

Last year’s Christmas celebration with my students' choir was truly a memorable experience. Seeing their enthusiasm, dedication, and the joy they brought through their singing filled my heart with gratitude. Each performance reflected their hard work, and the moments of laughter and bonding made it even more special. I am thrilled to meet them again this year, as we kick off our first rehearsal this afternoon. It’s a blessing to be a part of their musical journey, and I look forward to creating more cherished memories with them.

The golden rays of the January morning sun pierced through the window as Kehinde Ayoade adjusted his tie, ready for his first day back as the music teacher at Living Treasure Model School. The school compound buzzed with life—students reconnecting with friends, parents dropping off their children, and teachers exchanging warm greetings. Kehinde’s heart swelled with anticipation as the principal’s welcoming address highlighted the school’s dedication to creativity, with a special nod to the music department's impact. This term promised to be yet another opportunity to inspire young minds through the power of music. Entering the music room for his first class, Kehinde was greeted by eager students and the polished scent of a freshly cleaned space. On the board, he had written, “Music is the universal language of mankind,” setting the tone for the term. He started with an icebreaker, asking students to share their favorite songs and instruments, sparking excitement and curiosity. Kehinde outlined the term’s goals: the juniors would learn basic theory and recorder tunes, while seniors would explore harmony and ensemble work. By the time he demonstrated a simple melody on the piano, the students were captivated, ready to embark on their musical journey. As the day progressed, Kehinde moved between classes, encouraging students to explore their potential. Some struggled with basic notes, while others surprised him with hidden talents on the keyboard. Patiently guiding each one, he celebrated their small victories, knowing they were stepping stones to greater achievements. By the end of the day, Kehinde felt a deep sense of fulfillment.
